Brazil’s new law allowing the development of offshore wind farms has paved the way for regulatory clarity and investor security, according to Matheus Noronha, head of offshore wind energy at the Brazilian Association of Wind Energy Technologies (ABEEólica), a non-profit organisation that represents the country’s wind energy sector.
There is potentially around 700 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity in Brazil, highlighting the scale of opportunity available to foreign SMEs and startups that specialise in planning, environmental assessment and early-stage project development, Noronha says.
