In a move aimed at making Europe’s green transition more resilient to geopolitical uncertainty and supply-chain risks, the German government has unveiled a plan to reduce the European Union’s (EU)dependency on China for crucial wind turbine components.
On 5 August, Germany published the “Resilience Roadmap for Permanent Magnets,” designed to get at least 30% of the magnets used in the EU’s wind energy industry from outside China by 2030 and 50% by 2035. Currently, about 90% of the bloc’s permanent magnets and the rare earth materials used to make them come from China.
